North America & Latin America

Historically, North America (especially the United States of America), has been the highest emitting region of the world. The US and Canada are responsible for 27% of cumulative global emissions between the 18th century and the present day. Looking further south, deforestation has been a major issue in Latin America where, between 2000 and 2010, more than 5 million hectares were lost annually. LANDMARC’s American case studies therefore investigate issues related to these two factors: Bioenergy and Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) in Canada, and indigenous forest management in Venezuela.
